Forklift Tank Safety
The propane powered lift truck is amongst the most common types of lift trucks. These machinery are powered by propane, which come with certain considerations which must be accounted for. It is extremely important that PPE or also referred to as Personal Protective Equipment is worn all the time so as to be safe.
PPE or Personal Protective Equipment
Propane gas is very cold. So cold in fact that contact to your skin can cause serious burns to happen. When you are exchanging the propane tank or re-fueling, be sure to wear goggles or a full face shield and thick gloves. PPE or Personal Protective Equipment is a requirement to be used on site in order to keep the operator as safe as possible. PPE or Personal Protective Equipment is a standard workplace requirement for most businesses using this kind of machine and if the operator does not have the right things on, like steel-toe boots, a hardhat, goggles etc. than he or she will be prohibited from operating the machine.
Check the Valve
If you are in the process of exchanging the tank, be sure that the valve on the new tank is definitely turned off prior to connecting the fuel line. This is very important because when you are inserting the fuel line into an open valve, you will release the propane gas. This situation can result in a potentially dangerous condition.
Fire Extinguisher
Having a fire extinguisher available during the time the tank is being changed out or when re-fueling is occurring is another essential safety measure to have implemented. Most companies have fire extinguishers located near the refueling station. It is better to have one nearby and not need it, than to need one and not have one nearby. The majority of safety regulations need this is set up on location as well.
Secure the Tank
Most propane tanks are strapped securely into place by some kind of restraining device or strap. Be certain that this device is functioning properly and used correctly so that you can prevent the tank from falling or shifting, as this could also lead to a dangerous situation.
