Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is provided by huge industrial batteries which have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety measures should be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is very important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Full protection comprises goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place must be an emergency eyewash post. The route to the post must not be obstructed and an injured worker should be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never allow objects such as lighters or matches to be used while an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be properly ventilated. The recharging method could release gas. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
