Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and larger refueling tanks should be stored in a different building or complex so as to be more safe. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity must have "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a safe enclosure which could only be accessed by authorized personnel. It is very essential for the safety of the operator, and everyone they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.
The fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected from vehicle impact. Utilizing retaining systems such as concrete bumpers for example, could accomplish this task. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also vital to always have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. Furthermore, anybody who is operating the fueling station should be trained and also should be trained to safely and effectively operate the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a lift truck must be properly trained. This training includes a classroom part as well as hands-on training. When the training sessions have been completed, the individual has to be tested in order to prove that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also includes the proper way of the refueling process of the lift truck. The training also involves site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving.
Medical Treatment
There must be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center located inside the facility where the forklift is operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents that are used on site. This will also cover the acid in the lift truck battery, along with the propane that is used to refuel the unit.
MSDSs sheets need to be available for all personnel all the time. If any exposure incident occurs for example, the individual has to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is required, to must be given without any delay. Normally, if you are not sure if medical care is required, as a general rule; have a medical doctor examine the injury if you really believe it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
